Meta Platforms (META) is planning to release a new artificial intelligence (A.I.) app, putting it in direct competition against OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Meta says it plans to launch an A.I. app similar to its social media apps that include Facebook and Instagram. The company intends to debut its “Meta AI” app in this year’s second quarter.
The A.I. app is seen as pitting Meta Platforms against privately held OpenAI, whose ChatGPT chatbot is the leading A.I. app in America.
The new A.I. app also comes as Meta chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg plans to make his company the global leader in A.I.
Meta’s new standalone A.I. app follows the launch of the company’s Meta AI chatbot in September 2023, which is a digital assistant that can provide responses and create images based on user prompts.
Meta has also integrated A.I. into some features found on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.
However, this will be the company’s first standalone A.I. app available for download and use on smartphones similar to ChatGPT and the Chinese app DeepSeek.
Meta Platforms also reportedly has plans for a paid subscription service for its new A.I. app, similar to how OpenAI charges monthly fees for users to access its ChatGPT app.
Meta’s stock has risen 36% over the last 12 months to trade at $658.24 U.S. per share.
