Tom Lee, Chief Investment Officer at Fundstrat, perceives the recent market sell-off triggered by the launch of China’s low-cost AI model DeepSeek as an overreaction. In an interview on CNBC’s “Closing Bell,” Lee suggested that the market correction occurring on Monday could present a valuable opportunity for long-term investors.
Viewing Market Correction as an Opportunity
On Monday, stocks and cryptocurrencies experienced significant declines due to investor reactions to DeepSeek’s impact. This volatility particularly pressured shareholders in companies like AI chipmaker Nvidia.
“Markets dislike uncertainty and prefer visibility and solid competitive advantages. Therefore, the markets are a bit fearful. To me, this is an overreaction. Nvidia’s decline is the worst since March 2020, and we know this creates a substantial opportunity for investors,” Tom Lee stated.
Lee expressed surprise at Nvidia’s recent performance, likening it to a Betamax-like situation. He emphasized that demand for AI and Nvidia’s dominance in the chip market will likely remain strong.
“Due to a global labor shortage for AI, Nvidia’s chip dominance remains robust. I do not expect any changes justifying a sell-off of Nvidia shares unless a new model emerges.”
